Planned water supply maintenance for 9 to 16 June 2025

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will be doing planned work in the identified areas, which will result in water supply disruption. This critical maintenance work is done on our water supply infrastructure to benefit customers. Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to take note of the work that will take place and prepare accordingly.
Maintenance
work, including pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements
Residents
are advised to store enough water in advance as a precautionary measure.
Water should be stored in clean, sealed containers.
Planned
maintenance work will result in water supply disruption to these areas:
Wemmershoek Water Treatment Plant shutdown
The
Wemmershoek Water Treatment Plant (WTP) will be shut down from 00:00 on
Monday, 9 June 2025 until 24:00 on Tuesday, 10 June 2025. This will allow
for essential maintenance to be carried out during this period. Consumers in
Kraaifontein, Bloekombos and Wallacedene are kindly requested to reduce their
water consumption during this period. The City’s reservoirs in the
northern areas will be filled in advance. The Drakenstein and
Stellenbosch Municipalities as well as private consumers along the
Wemmershoek pipeline have been informed to make the necessary preparations.
Affected residents are kindly advised to store water in clean, sealed
containers ahead of the disruption to ensure adequate supply.
Hanover
Park, Athlone, Rylands, Newfields, Pinati Estate, Belthorn Estate, Penlyn
Estate and Belgravia
The Water and Sanitation Directorate’s appointed
contractor will conduct low-pressure investigations to improve the pressures in
these areas. The project will commence on 9 June 2025 and is expected to
run for approximately five months. Intermittent water pressure disruptions may
be experienced temporarily as the work progresses during the project period.
The operational hours will be from 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays. Affected residents will be
notified in advance weekly of the planned water disruptions.
Parts
of Wynberg
The water supply to these areas will be shut off temporarily from
08:00 until 20:30 on Tuesday, 10 June 2025. This will enable the
maintenance team to safely install valves and make
connections to the existing water main at
the intersections with Lindley and Bower Road in Wynberg. The area bounded
by Alphen Hill Road, Bower Road, Wellington Avenue, Bayview Road, Silverlea
Road, Constantia Main Road and possibly the immediate surrounding streets will
experience low water pressure or no water during this period.
Part
of Fish Hoek
The water supply to this area will be shut off
temporarily from 08:30 until 20:30 on Tuesday, 10 June 2025. This will
enable the maintenance team to install valves and make connections to the
existing infrastructure in the area. Harrington Street, Arthur Wright Road,
Castleman Road, Carmichael Road and surrounding streets in Fish Hoek will
experience no water or low water pressure during this period.
Paarden
Eiland
The water supply to Paarden Eiland will be temporarily
shut off from 18:00 on Friday, 13 June 2025 until 24:00 on Sunday, 15 June
2025. This will enable the maintenance team to safely replace a 915mm
diameter bulk water meter at the Paarden Eiland Transfer Pump Station. Some
parts of Paarden Eland will experience water at low pressure and other parts
will experience no water during this period.
Oranjezicht
Reservoir shutdown
The Water and
Sanitation Directorate will commence with the annual cleaning of the
Oranjezicht Reservoir from Monday, 16 June 2025 until Monday, 11 July
2025. Water supply will be rerouted from the Tygerberg Reservoir to
the Oranjezicht Reservoir supply areas during this period.
This work forms part of the Water and Sanitation Directorate’s proactive
infrastructure maintenance and upgrade programme, which ensures the future
continuity of water supply by addressing the issue of unaccounted for
water.
The
City sincerely regrets any inconvenience.
What residents need to know about larger-scale planned water supply disruptions:
Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure it is being done at a time that is least disruptive to the water supply.
All sites where water and sanitation repairs and upgrades are conducted are deemed to be construction sites and, as such, are off-limits to members of the public.
Sometimes the maintenance work can be more complex than anticipated, which means the work could take longer.
For a short period after the supply has been restored, the water may be discoloured or look milky. This is because of trapped air in the pipes. If left to stand in a glass, the appearance will become clear, like normal.

How residents are advised to prepare for planned water supply disruptions:
Store enough water in clean, sealed containers in advance for use during this period.
Keep your taps closed to prevent any water loss and/or damage when the water supply is restored.
